We are not going to fool ourselves: a move is always complicated and it is also boring. You will probably sulk several times and argue with whoever is helping you. The more you trust who helps you, the more you will argue. This is a universal rule.

Below we want to give you some tips to reduce the stress caused by moving home. We can’t guarantee that you won’t get bored, but we can at least make it easier.

Cleaning before a move

Do not expect to do everything in a short time, especially if yours is large or if you have been living in it for a long time, or both. The number of objects that we are capable of accumulating is surprising.

At least a month before making the move, start getting rid of everything you are not going to take with you. Take the opportunity to clean. Be realistic: all those clothes (and shoes) you put away aren’t going to be back in style, and if you look closely, you have more clothes in the closet than you wear daily. Give away, resell, or leave in a solidarity container what is in good use.

Preparations for a move

before you start, go gather cardboard boxes, garbage bags, adhesive tape, scissors, bubble wrap for delicate things (or newspaper, cheaper), and a couple of thick-tipped markers to mark the boxes.

If you are going to make the move without the help of professionals, you will also need tools to disassemble the furniture that you are going to take with you.

If you take the kitchen appliances, remember that you will need to defrost the refrigerator. Find an alternative place for your food if you don’t want to lose everything you have in the fridge.

Packing for a move

Start by putting in the boxes everything that you do not need for daily life: special tableware, sets of sheets, clothes from another season, figurines, and decorations, for example. Mark the boxes well specifying what is inside and in which room of the new house they go. It will help you when unpacking.

Don’t fill the bigger boxes with heavy things or they will be impossible to move later. Take advantage of them for things like quilts, clothes, or toys.

Set aside the essentials for daily living. Put it in some well-marked boxes that will be the last ones you mount on the truck. So you can quickly identify it when you arrive at your new home and you won’t have to search through all the packages.

The time of the move

What you need is that the bathroom is in use, as well as the kitchen, the bed and you’re most basic things to live. The rest can come later if you can’t do it all at once.

If you hire a moving company, they will probably move everything in a day or two. In this case, make sure that everything is in order before paying the last bill.

If you’re moving with your friends, you’ll need to rent (or borrow) a truck or van. This option is cheaper but it will surely take you more time. The better the boxes are marked (which room they go to) the easier and faster everything will be. Remember that it will have to be you, or a handyman friend, who will do the disassembly and subsequent assembly of the furniture.
