The destruction of the environment at the hands of man is one of the most debated issues in recent years. The deterioration of biodiversity and the scarcity of resources remind us of our responsibility to adopt a more ecological and sustainable behavior. The involvement at the citizen and government levels is gaining importance and one of the most efficient environmental policies focuses on the preservation of the ozone layer.
Ozone layer
- For a few years now, people have been talking about the destruction of the ozone layer. But many people do not understand the importance of preserving the ozone layer, because it is a deterioration that we do not perceive in our day to day. However, the explanation is simple and very forceful. Without the ozone layer, life would not be possible on this planet on which we live. It seems a reason enough for all of us to get involved in its recovery.
- The ozone layer works as a kind of shield or filter to protect us from solar ultraviolet radiation. Without this layer, ultraviolet radiation would sterilize the Earth’s surface, making any form of life impossible. Have you heard of global warming? Well, it is nothing more than the slow process that will lead us to this situation if we do not remedy the destruction of the ozone layer.
- In this sense, protocols have been established worldwide, which, to a greater or lesser extent, are complied with by almost all countries in an attempt to stop the deterioration of the ozone layer. Countries that comply with these environmental protocols have committed to reducing or eliminating certain chemicals, especially chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). However, environmental specialists consider that the policies adopted are not enough and that in many cases; they are not even complied with.
What can we do
- We are already familiarizing ourselves with some sustainable habits, such as saving energy, not wasting water, or participating in domestic recycling. But can we do something to preserve the ozone layer? Yes, we can bring a change in our behavior, such as not buying aerosols that contain CFC gases, not using products with methyl bromide in our crops, not abusing air conditioning or heating and keeping these facilities in good condition, using light bulbs low consumption and reduce the use of private cars.
- We cannot forget that the deterioration of the ozone layer is already causing the disappearance of some species, both animal and plant and that the impact on our health is already evident. The increase in cases of skin cancer, and many eye diseases, including certain infections, is directly related to the progressive destruction of the ozone layer.
- It is of vital importance to become aware of our degree of individual responsibility in the preservation of the environment and in the construction of a new, more sustainable way of life.
